Orthotics Print E-mail
Written by Russel Sher
imageAn orthotic is an assistive orthopedic devices that is used to alter foot function. Orthotics are generally designed to treat, adjust, and support a wide myriad of mechanical disorders of the lower extremities. Some orthotics are simple, commercially-made devices, such as cushioned heel cups or insoles sold at numerous stores over-the-counter. However, most practitioners have found these to be less than effective for many of their patients.

Dr. Sher is specially trained to craft custom-made orthotic devices for meeting the unique needs of a particular patient. These custom orthotics often begins with creating a impression mold of the foot shape which later is altered in order to balance out deformities and to correct misalignment. The finished orthotic can be placed in an ordinary shoe and will support the foot and eliminate abnormal foot biomechanics through proper alignment.

Who can benefit from an orthotic?

Almost anyone, from children to adults, can benefit from orthotics. Orthotics are capable of alleviating many common foot problems that cause pain and discomfort in otherwise healthy people.

There are numerous symptoms that may indicate misalignment of the feet. These signs and symptoms include the following:
  • Abnormal shoe wear
  • Bunions
  • Chronic heel, knee, or low back pain
  • Flatfeet
  • Frequent ankle sprains
  • Gait abnormalities
  • Shin pain
Pain and discomfort are often indicators that something is wrong. If foot, lower limb, or back pain is not properly treated, the underlying condition causing it may worsen.
